Site Analyzing - Flooding Data
High Tide Flooding:
During high tides, the "western" portion of land along Flushing Creek is at greater risk of flooding/ more of that area is susceptible to flooding.
Figure out:
- what are "high tides"
- when exactly they occur
- why is the western portion of land along the creek more susceptible to flooding? (perhaps, the eastern part is at a higher elevation than the western ; find out elevation of both "sides")
Key - red indicates the areas that'll flood during a high tide
Through the overlay of social and economic data on a map that depicts sea level rise, one is able to see the potential impact of sea level risings on vulnerable people and businesses. (This information is based on population attributes from the Census 2010, specifically the age, property and the built environment data.)
Key - dark red areas indicate tracts having a high vulnerability
light red areas indicates decreasing vulnerability
green area = low-lying areas that are hydrologically unconnected areas prone to flooding
*** Part of the map contains neither dark or light red because no data from the Census was collected from those precise areas since these areas are not residential areas.
Key - dark blue = areas that are hydrologically connected to the ocean / greater depth
light bue = flooding due to amount sea level rose
green area = low-lying areas that are hydrologically unconnected areas prone to flooding
The following images are maps indicating the areas that'll flood due to sea level rise. Each photo indicates the amount of feet the sea level has rose (seen on the left side of images) :
Current situation of flooding due to current sea level :
Sea Level Rose by 4 feet :
Sea Level Rose by 5 feet :
Sea Level Rose by 6 feet :
Sea Level Rose by 7 feet :
Sea Level Rose by 8 feet :
Sea Level Rose by 10 feet :
It isn't until the sea level rises to about 4ft when we actually see a lot of flooding starting to occur.
By the time the sea level has rose to 10ft, the majority of the available (unused) terrain/land has flooded.
